The Ruins and Their Setting

The Ruins and Their Setting

Burgruine Kräheneck is a defensive castle ruin set above the lower-lying Burg Rabeneck (Weißenstein). Burgenwelt describes Rabeneck as the residential castle in this pair; the two sites are linked in a local history of castle-building and settlement.

The City of Pforzheim says Kräheneck was probably built in the 12th century. It first belonged to the Lords of Kräheneck and later to the Lords of Weißenstein. The city describes castles like this as witnesses to settlement history in the northern Black Forest, where planned forest clearance and settlement developed from them.

The shield wall is the most substantial surviving part of the castle, with few other remains. For another historic site in the area, Rabeneck Pforzheim provides a companion point of interest.

Finding the Approach

Finding the Approach

The final approach to Kräheneck includes stairs and a short, steeper forest path over uneven ground. A signposted paved path leads uphill to the castle after about 800 m from a parking area on the left.

A circular route in Pforzheim’s official hiking information passes the ruins of Hoheneck, Kräheneck and Rabeneck. This circuit gives you a way to take in several historic sites; the area also has a separate nature-walk option in Unteres Würmtal.

Walking from the Hotel Area

Walking from the Hotel Area

From the hotel, the walk to Burgruine Kräheneck takes about 30 minutes; driving takes about 12 minutes. The approach at the ruins includes uneven, sloping ground, so account for that when deciding how to reach the site and what to combine with your visit.

The three-castle circuit can fit into a broader day of sightseeing, as in this one-day Pforzheim itinerary.
